You Can Visit Apollonia

It is an ancient city built by Greeks in 588 BC and can be found on Albania’s central coast. This ancient Greek city, originally named Gylakeia and later changed to Apollonia in honour of the God Apollo, was important to the Greeks and even had a philosophy school at one point. This ancient town is a very good place to explore ancient sites, well-maintained temples, theatres and libraries.

Enjoy The Beautiful Nature In Qafe Shtame National Park

This stunning national park in central Albania, named after the Qaf-Shtam mountain pass, is located on the edge of the mountains just north of the capital. Tall green trees, high peaks, valleys, and rolling hills are ideal for hiking and photography enthusiasts.

Visit Kruje’s National Ethnographic Museum

It’s well worth taking the guided tour of this traditional Ottoman house, now a museum, where you’ll gain insight into traditional Albanian life over the centuries. The Ethnographic Museum, built in the 18th century, will show you how family members spent years living in Albania during this period. There is an old bakery, a blacksmith, a wine cellar, and many other interesting exhibits inside the complex.

Take A Tour Of Kruje Castle

Near the Ethnographic Museum is the lovely Kruj Castle, famous for its well-preserved and rather imposing castle, which also houses the Skanderbeg Museum.

It was built as early as the 5th or 6th century and served as Georg Kastriot’s headquarters during the Ottoman sieges that began in 1444. Kastriot effectively repelled multiple attacks from this simple elliptical castle also with no more than 3,000 men, putting a serious dent in the Ottoman Empire’s expansion into Central Europe.

The Ottomans referred to him as Iskender Bey. This has the same meaning as Lord or Leader Alexander and is thought to be a reference to Alexander the Great himself. Skanderbeg is the English translation of his name. He deservedly became a national hero in Albania, earning the moniker “Dragon of Albania.” Skanderbeg Square in central Tirana is now dominated by a monument dedicated to Georg Kastriot Skanderbeg.

It is simple to get to Kruj Castle as a day trip from Tirana. It’s also small, so you should only need a few hours to explore the area. If you’re wondering what to do in Albania, take a day trip from Tirana to this historically significant castle.

Gjirokastra A UNESCO Listed Site

Gjirokastra in the country’s south was added to the UNESCO list of cultural heritage sites because it is a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town. As one might expect, Ottoman architecture takes centre stage here, with many of the old stone houses providing a glimpse into the past. It’s no surprise that the city is also referred to as the “city of stones.”

Skanderbeg Square A Place Of Cultural Significance

The Skanderbeg Monument dominates the square, which is named after the heroic figure Georg Kastriot Skanderbeg, who successfully stopped the Ottoman Empire’s advance into Eastern Europe (see Kruj Castle above). The monument stands in the place where a Josef Stalin statue once stood. The square, which features a large lawn, rows of stately trees, and colourful flowerbeds, is the main place for celebrations in Tirana and Albania.

The National Historical Museum, the Palace of Culture, the Et’hem Bey Mosque, the Clock Tower, the National Library, and various ministries are all located around Skanderbeg Square.

Summing Up

Albania is alive and well, with brightly coloured pedestrian streets showcasing some wonderful Ottoman-era buildings and Italian architectural styles that highlight the country’s rich history.
